Amsterdam, January 14, 2026 — In a bold celebration of South Asian literary heritage and cross-cultural artistic expression, the Interculturele Progressive Stitching initiative is proud to announce the Tribute to Sadequain Art Festival 2026. This landmark cultural event will honor the life, work, and enduring legacy of the legendary Pakistani poet, calligrapher, and painter — Sadequain — through a dynamic fusion of poetry, visual art, music, and intercultural dialogue.

The festival, set to take place in the spring of 2026 across multiple venues in the Netherlands, will feature an extraordinary lineup of acclaimed poets, performers, and scholars from Pakistan and beyond. At its heart stands Shahzad Ali Khan (Mian Meeri Qawwal), whose soul-stirring renditions of Sadequain’s verses and classical qawwali bring the poet’s spiritual intensity to life.

Joining him on this artistic pilgrimage are:

  • Nasir Khan — Poet and literary curator, known for his incisive commentary on post-colonial identity and modern Urdu verse.
  • Muneeb Amjad — Scholar and performer whose recitations breathe new life into Sadequain’s metaphysical themes.
  • Zain Umar Draz — Emerging voice bridging digital media with traditional poetic forms.
  • Zahid Ali — Renowned for his lyrical depth and commitment to preserving regional dialects within Urdu poetry.
  • Ijaz Ali — Multimedia artist and storyteller who explores Sadequain’s visual motifs through contemporary installations.

Why Sadequain?

Sadequain (1930–1987) was more than an artist — he was a visionary who fused Islamic calligraphy with existentialist philosophy, social critique, and surrealism. His murals adorn public buildings across Pakistan; his poetry challenges power, celebrates human dignity, and mourns the loss of moral compass in modernity. By honoring Sadequain, we reaffirm our belief that art must remain a vessel for truth, resistance, and universal connection.

Intercultural Progressive Stitching: Weaving Worlds Together

Founded by the InterCulturele Progressie Vestiging, “Interculturele Progressive Stitching” is not merely a festival — it is a movement. It seeks to stitch together diverse cultural threads through collaborative creation, fostering understanding between communities often separated by geography, language, or history.

As stated by the festival’s director:

“Sadequain’s art transcends borders. His cries for justice, beauty, and introspection resonate as strongly today as they did fifty years ago — especially in our fragmented world. Through this tribute, we invite Dutch audiences, diaspora communities, and global art lovers to experience the universality of his message.”
